This is the first module in the course.

1.1 What Are Digital Products?

Imagine having something to sell that never runs out, doesn’t need shipping, and can be delivered instantly anywhere in the world.

That’s the magic of digital products!

These are items you create, sell, and use entirely online.

They can be anything from music files, ebooks, and software to digital images and online courses.

I even make and sell my own, such as website templates, Lightroom presets, and wallpaper packs.

What makes digital products so great is that everything is stored, shared, and used digitally—it’s simple and hassle-free!

1.2 The Benefits of Selling Digital Products

Selling digital products comes with some amazing perks:

  • Earn Passive Income: Once you’ve created a digital product, you can sell it over and over without doing extra work, making it a great way to earn passive income.

  • Easily Scalable: Whether you sell to ten people or ten thousand, there’s no need to worry about running out of stock or dealing with big costs as you grow.

  • Low Costs to Start and Run: You don’t need to worry about storage or tying up money in physical products. Your main expenses will likely be small hosting or platform fees.

  • Sell to the World: With the internet, your shop is open to customers all over the globe, and you can do it all from your couch - literally!

  • Quick and Flexible Updates: If you need to make changes or updates, it’s super easy to tweak your products based on customer feedback or market trends.

1.3 A Quick Look at Digital Products

Digital products come in all shapes and sizes, making it a super creative and exciting space to explore.

Chances are, you’ll find a few that really click with your skills and interests.

There are so many options that listing them all would be impossible, but here are some of the most popular ones:

  • Wallpapers and Digital Art: Perfect for graphic designers and artists who want to turn their creativity into income.
Personally, this has been one of my favourite types of digital products to create, along with the next few on this list: themes, templates, and presets.

  • Themes and Templates: From website templates to resume designs, these make life easier for users by giving them a head start on their projects.

  • Presets for Photography or Video Editing: These are ready-made settings that help photographers and videographers create professional looks quickly and consistently.

  • E-Books and Guides: If you’re passionate about a topic, writing an e-book or guide is a great way to share your expertise and help others.

  • Courses: With online learning booming, courses are a fantastic option. You can teach anything—cooking, coding, or even how to train for a marathon. If you know something well, you can turn it into a course!

  • Software: Apps, games, and programs fall under this category. Software is one of the most widely recognized types of digital products.

  • Music & Audio Products: These include original music, sound effects, and audiobooks.

  • Plugins & Tools: Think browser extensions, editing plugins, or tools to streamline workflows.

  • Membership Sites & Subscriptions: Offer exclusive content, communities, or ongoing services through a subscription model (e.g., monthly fees for premium content or tools).

If you’re familiar with some of my work, you might already know the types of digital products I sell, which include:

  • Wallpapers (for both mobile and desktop)

  • Website Themes (Framer, Notion, etc.)

  • Photo Presets (for Adobe Lightroom)

  • Video LUTs (for Apple Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro)

  • Mobile Icons

There’s no limit to what you can create and share in this space!

1.4 A Look Into My Digital Products & How Much They’ve Made

Let’s take a look at some of my products and the success they’ve had.

After that, I’ll share spotlights on other digital product creators I’ve been following for a while, and the success that they have achieved.

Android Icons: My First Digital Product

My journey into digital products started in the early 2010s with icons for Android phones. Back then, I was really into customizing my phone and designing my own icons. I shared my setups online, and soon people started asking for my icons.

I decided to sell them for $2-3, which wasn’t a lot, and it wasn’t a huge success financially. But it was an important first step—it gave me a taste of what it’s like to create and sell digital products, and it sparked the passion I have for this space today.

Tumblr Themes: My Big Break

Back in 2011 and 2012, I started my own Tumblr blog.

At the time, Tumblr was huge—a unique blend of social media and blogging.

It was one of the first platforms to introduce “liking” and “reposting” content, which made it really engaging.

Just like with my Android phone, I wanted to customise my Tumblr blog.

To do that, I started learning HTML and CSS so I could tweak my site.

That’s when I realised there was a demand for Tumblr themes.

When I first started creating premium themes, they weren’t great, and Tumblr rejected me from their theme marketplace.

They had strict requirements, and I simply didn’t meet them.

But I didn’t give up.

Over the next few months, I honed my design skills and got a better understanding of what the Tumblr community wanted.

I also built credibility by releasing free themes that gained thousands of users.

With that success under my belt, I reapplied—and this time, I got in.

That’s when things took off.

My income skyrocketed, going from a few thousand dollars to as much as $30,000 in a single month at its peak.

Over seven years, I made nearly $700,000 from Tumblr themes, with $300,000 of that coming in just the first couple of years.

This success completely changed my life.

It gave me the financial freedom to move into my own home and forced me to grow up fast.

I knew this kind of income wouldn’t last forever, so I had to be smart about how I managed it.

This experience taught me so much about creating, scaling, and sustaining a digital products business.

My Tumblr themes are no longer available.

Over time, Tumblr updated their theme guidelines, and meeting those requirements simply wasn’t worth the time and effort anymore.

Before I officially closed up shop though, I managed to capture the above screenshot as a reminder of what I achieved.

The market for Tumblr themes has disappeared as Tumblr itself lost its popularity.

But I still think this story is worth sharing.

It’s a great example of how you can make money by tapping into a trending social network with the right skills at the right time.

For me, everything aligned—being in the right place at the right time with the right expertise.

Interestingly, my success with Tumblr themes also opened doors to custom theme projects.

Some clients wanted unique, tailor-made designs, and I charged anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000 per project.

My biggest client during this time was the fashion brand New Look, which was a huge milestone for me as a creator.

This experience taught me not just about creating digital products but also about identifying opportunities in emerging markets and leveraging them for long-term success.

Wallpapers: A Side Project Turned Success

As my YouTube channel grew, I started using wallpapers I designed on my own devices.

Viewers noticed and began asking about them, which gave me a lightbulb moment—I realised there was real demand for high-quality, unique wallpapers.

People wanted their devices to look like mine.

I began selling wallpaper packs as a fun side project, with no big expectations.

But I was completely wrong about its potential.

The income from selling wallpapers ended up being far more than I ever anticipated.

One standout example was my Gradient Wallpaper Pack, which made over $$,$$$ — proving I was onto something.

From there, I started creating regular wallpaper packs, building a catalog of styles and designs.

My approach was simple: make wallpapers I would personally use but that others would also love.

While wallpapers have more staying power compared to something like Tumblr themes, they don’t hold the same value.

At the end of the day, they’re just images that make your phone or computer look nice.

But if you can create a unique style or design, you’ll have a strong selling point that makes marketing much easier.

For anyone thinking about creating wallpapers, I’d highly recommend focusing on a unique style or concept—your USP (unique selling point) is what will set you apart and attract customers.

Below are some screenshots of my Gumroad and Payhip dashboards, where you can see how much I’ve made from my different digital products.
